Carved Book Landscapes - Guy Laramee
Some artists work in water colours while others work in books. What? Tired of the notion that "new technologies" are changing our cultural landscape and making both the book and libraries obsolete, artist Guy Laramee created a very original series of carvings that use books as the medium, and set off to question the human condition, implying that ultimate knowledge may be an erosion rather than an accumulation...and doing away with the notion of "what" we think and focusing on "that" we think. Some pretty deep stuff. Regardless of the intellectual motivation behind it, Mr. Laramee's work is outrageously intricate and unbelievably beautiful. Even now, knowing that these are carved from the pages of books, we have a hard time wrapping our heads around the images and medium. We have posted numerous pics after the jump, and you can go here to learn more, and to see some of the impressive paintings that he has created as well.
